Sent to Health Experts January 09 10:05 AM

my rat terrier pup 12 weeks old has been checked for an UTI. came up neg. however, her urine gravity is low and watery? they put her on amoxicillin and now on Torbutrol 1mg.(1/2 tablet twice a day) Maybe Vaginitis? She is urinating then goes back a few minutes later and urinates a pea size spot. This happens about three time while I home. I have let her have free run in the kitchen since she needs to go potty more now. Please help I had her house broken (paper trained) now making accidents! Thank you for your time.

Hello:

According to research, "Torbutrol" is normally administered for relief of dogs acute or chronic, non-productive cough associated with tracheobronchitis, tracheitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis and pharyngitis originating from inflammatory conditions of the "upper respiratory" tract in dogs. It could possibly be assigned for other purpose as noted by the Vet.

Torbutrol could also cause a feeling of nausea, that will to go away eventually, but in case you start to notice appetite change, this might be helpful as well.

It is very likely that there is a relationship to the medication with the sudden change in urinary habits. And sometimes, certain meds can make it easy for bladder infections to occur, so it would be worth having her checked by your vet for this as well.
Another option could be from anxiety in the dog. It is not uncommon to see behaviour, as well as bodily habits take change if she is feeling anxious, or aggitated.
If her behavior is very out of the norm,or appears to be causing her pain, etc;. I would contact the Vet ASAP & explain the situation, and get their professional opinion; just to be safe!
I sincerely hope this helps you some. Feel free to write again if you have anything further. I am including a website you can visit for additional information on changes in your dogs behaviour.
I wish you the best of luck & God Bless!

Reply to cherummy's Post: Ihave been told now that no med's are required! it makes it worse? Just use 1/2 & 1/2 of water and apple cider vinegar squirting it on the area twice to three times a day. Also use monastat by rubbing it in real good. (I'm not doing that but I am trying the apple cider vinegar. Since I quite to the med's she has already improved no more accidents in the house. Thought you may want to hear what advise I was given by serveral breeders. Thank you for all your concern with my pet.

For starters, rat terriers are not the easiest breed to housebreak. They tend to be a little stubborn and are easily excited.

I suggest that you buy some Odoban and spray it in the spots where she commonly goes. It will mask the scent and possibly lessen the desire to pee there. You can find it at your grocer. It's over by the febreeze.

Sometimes it takes a little time to retrain them after an illness. You should use a crate after you rule out a medical reason for the peeing.

If the symptoms persist, you should see your vet.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy):

Thank you for updating me on her condition. Why was the Torbutrol administered in the first place? What was he treating her for in the first place, was it for the urine gravity ?
I am glad that she is responding to an herbal/ home remedy; proof in itself that often "traditional" medication is not always the best approach! happy to hear the condition is slowing. I've kept you in my prayers. Good luck for continued improvement!
Take care...

The Torbutrol was administered for pain from the vaginitis?
