My nephew plays college football. He was told by one of the team trainers that he had a staph infection when he developed some skin leisons. They treated it by draining the lesions. He was told that these infections were common in athletes and to prevent these he should bathe after workouts with antibacterial soap. Is this correct info or should he seek medical advise?

Hello,

Yes, Staphylococcus aureus skin infections are transmitted by touch, and common among children and athletes. Staph germs are everywhere, and can cause infection in hair follicles and sweat glands, and in any tiny cut in the skin. Bathing regularly with antibacterial soap reduces the number of staph germs that are available to cause an infection. At home, we encourage hot compresses several times a day to encourage the lesion to come to a head and drain on its own, followed by antibacterial cream and bathing with antibacterial soap at least daily. If the infections are recurrent, your nephew may want to see a doctor to make sure he isn't a staph carrier. These people harbor the staph germs in their nose and perianal area. Treatment is mupirocin ointment (Bactroban®) applied to the nasal passages and perianal area twice daily for a couple of weeks. If the lesions do not clear up with the interventions provided by the trainers, he should also see a medical provider.
