My granddaughter is being said to have a learning disability leaning toward mental retardation. What does this mean and what can be done to help her? We know she is not retarded.

My granddaughter is eight years old in the second grade. They want to hold her back and give her help. We don't understand. Looks like they would pass her and help her.

If she is not passing the grade she is in then it would only hurt her to pass her and then try to help her as she would need to be able to pass that level of work but until she is able to pass second grade work they need to keep her at that level until she is ready to move up. I would suggest if you do not believe she is mentally challanged that you consider getting her a tutor who can work one on one with her as this would be a big help versus school when they are trying to work with 30 some students. Years ago they did just keep passing students but then they would fall further and further behind the others and this makes it even harder to catch up. You might want to talk with her teachers at school and see about some after school tutoring as I feel this would be a big help to her in allowing her to continue on with her class.

I guess I was looking for something I didn't already know. My granddaughter has been making passing grades just low. When they spoke about mental redartation that throwed us. But what you have said is what we already knew. We could not understand this because she is passing on her own. We knew she had problems. They have already been toturing, but it has not helped at all.
Thank you, I guess I will accept this, but it is not anymore than we already knew.

I am sorry I was not able to offer you anything that you did not know but if she is not actually failing then they should pass her on to the next grade just continue with the tutoring. I would also recommend "Hooked on Phonics" as this program has proven to have wonderful results and it would be an at home suppliment to the tutoring already being given now. If you accept my answer please click the yes button on this page or if you have problems please contact the customer service link at the bottom of this page to let them know you accept my answer. I wish you the very best of luck in this tough time as I know situations like this can be very hard, but the Hooked on Phonics really helped my youngest daughter who was having trouble with her grades so I hope this will be something that you will look into.
