Sent to Health Experts July 08 08:50 PM

Two menstual cycles ago, I stopped taking my Ortho Tricyclen one week early to induce my period. My next cycle was normal. However, the NEXT cycle went like this: I got my period for one day, nothing for two days, then bright red spotting for the past 10 days. Also, some brown spotting along with bright red spotting for the past 2 days. The day after my one day of "normal" period, I thought maybe I had not taken a tampon out, I couldn't remember. I did feel around, could not feel anything. A few days later, I had sex - wouldn't I have felt a lost tampon? During past few days, some occasional cramping, but I think was due to digestion, I'm not sure. During all this time, occasional burning, but I have had problems with bacterial vaginosis for the past few months, so....
Also, because of the fishy odor I would get with the bv, I started taking Femanol 11 days ago. My main complaint right now is a fould vaginal odor. It is not fishy or like anything I have ever smelled before. Thoughts?

this may just be due to the hormonal fluctuations causing the abnormal bleeding, or the dried blood itself.
if youre not absolutely sure about the tampon, and either way to check the bleeding, id see your dr. this can lead to serious infection. youd likley know with sex that it was there but its possible that it was pressed up high enough, or due to location of the tampon he wouldnt have felt it.
this is all likely due to changing the pill regimen and estrogen abnormalities because of it but we cant be sure.

I was seen and there was indeed a lost tampon. The physician tested and found many many clue cells so prescribed metronidazole gel - I am on day two of a 5-day treatment. The physician also did an exam and said everything felt normal. My question is this: I've had a distended stomach ever since losing the tampon which was 2 weeks ago. Coincidence or a sign of something? I have no pain, no gas, normal bowel movements, although less frequently than normal. But my stomach is very distended and hard. If it is no cause for concern, any ideas to reduce the bloating?

as long as you have no fevers or abdominal pain this is likely left over inflammation due to the retained foreign body (tampon). the metronidazole cover the BV infection which is the cause of the clue cells. there are other infections that can occur due to the tampon that this antbiotic wouldnt cover. if you havent heard of it theres a disease called toxic shock syndrome which can result from a tampon like this. if the above symptoms occur, dizziness or rash call your dr.
otherwise once youre on the metro for a couple more days the bloating should resolve on its own, when the inflammatory response has decreased in the body. theres not much you can do to reduce the bloating at this point.
