Sent to Health Experts June 03, 2005 3:20 p.m.

while i was pregnant i planned to get my son circumcized, the state of FL medicad doesnt pay for this, so we were going to do it through my ob for $300 but then my son came 6 weeks premature he had to stay in the hospital for 2 weeks and couldnt get the surgery bc he was to small. My husband and i really want this done but now my babys peditritian is sending my somewhere else for it and they are asking for $1500 for the surgery and $400 for the office visit, we can not afford to dish out money like that, do you have any advice or referrals?

As you may know, there has been some recent debate over whether male circumcision is good or bad. While a circumcised penis is easier to keep clean -- circumcision may very well decrease penile sensitivity resulting in less intense sexual pleasure for the uncircumcised mail.

I hope that the information in the above article is a benefit to you.

You may also know that the American Medical Association (AMA) currently takes the stand that circumcision is not a medically necessary procedure. This means that -- if you have insurance -- it is unlikely to pay for this procedure.

If you remain in favor of having your son circumcised -- other than 'Doctor shopping' -- I have no specific advice to offer regarding how to get the procedure done for less money..

As a 55-year-old male who was born nine weeks premature -- and was never circumcised -- I can tell you that I have not personally regretted not having it done.

By retracting the foreskin, and cleaning your son's penis, on a regular basis (and teaching your son, when he is old enough, to do the same) it is possible to greatly reduce any risks or inconvenience associated with not being circumcised.

Let me know if you need more input. If not, thanks for the opportunity to assist you... I would really appreciate your honoring my efforts by 'pushing the button' and Accepting this answer. Adding a bonus -- should you wish to do so -- is always warmly welcomed.

Good Luck!

Steve
