If a 7 month old has a ruptured blood clot in the head due to a fall, is there a chance he could be saved? If so; would time be a major factor?

Brain injuries can and do heal. That being said, brains are the slowest part of our bodies to heal when they have been damaged or have trauma such as the baby.

Depending on how large the bleed is, will depend on how long it will take. The baby's doctor is the best one to ask this question of because he/she has seen the test results.

Hope that helps, and hope the baby is better real soon.

Unfortunatley my son passed away in April this year, Just to clarify my question I will give you the brief story of what happend;, My oldest son was carrying my youngest, the oldest tripped on a couch pillow and fell with the baby hitting his head first, from that point on until he reached the hospital took about an hour to an hour and a half. then an additional 30 - 45 minutes before they even were able to operate. Do you think they would have been able to save him if we were able to reach the hospital in a timely manner?

I agree with Kerry, although in emergency medicine, they refer to 'the Golden Hour' (the first hour after a catastrophic injury) as being the time when medical intervention is most effective -- there is no way to know whether earlier treatment would have saved your son's life -- or, if it had, what kind of lasting problems he may have had from the injury.

Although no one can feel your particular pain -- or answer those questions which will always be with you -- there are other parents who, because they have lost a child, can provide support to you and your family. This reference is an article about losing a child in pregnancy -- but, below the article are many support groups and other organizations for grieving parents. One of the best is called Compassionate Friends. You may find some helpful resources there.

I hope you will not mind if I share a personal story... when I was about nine years old -- some friends of my parents lost a child when one brother shot another while playing with a gun they both thought was unloaded. To this day, I can still see the empty chair at that dining room table -- and the pain in the other brother's eyes...

I urge you to be very careful that your understandable and normal questioning about your son's death -- does not, inadvertently, cause your older son to feel that you blame him. With that in mind, I recommend that you consider some grief counseling for your family.

Here is the name and address of a local grief counselor:

Susan Couch, LMSW
Licensed Medical Social Worker -- specializing in grief counseling.
League City, TX
HelpHorizons Username: Susan Dian
Degrees: MSW, BA

I could not find a telephone number online -- but she may be listed in your local telephone book.

Send an email to Susan

Good Luck!
