should one get a second opinion before having a biopsy on

Sent to Health Experts January 02, 2006 2:10 p.m.

Should one get a second opinion before having a biopsy on the prostate gland of a healthy 73 year old man? His PSA level came in at 4.2 and the urologist involved says one side of the prostate gland is slightly larger than the other side. Please help. Biopsy is scheduled for this week. THank you.

It's a tough call, I don't know his full medical history. If generally he is in great health still, I would get another opinion. I don't know if he was treated prior with antibiotic and the PSA test was re-done or not. If that is not the case, then I would suggest another opinion or ask his doctor about treating with a full course of antibiotics and repeating a PSA test as well. If that has been done already then I would suggest a biopsy then to be on the safe side.

Hope this helps and gives you some ideas in order to decide your next step. If you need anything else please feel free to ask. If you found this helpful don’t forget to click the *accept* button!

That is very helpful in making our decision. Let us add that the urologist reccomending the biopsy seemed to advise the biopsy based on the slight enlargment of one side of the prostate gland. He did not say he felt a nodule or thickening or anything of that type. We are just very uncertain that we want to undergo an invasive procedure if it would be fine to wait for a while and retest.
Should the antibiotics make a difference in the level of the PSA? Thank you so much for your help.
