what can cause a child to chew wood

my 28 month old granddaughter has since very small has chewed wood and hard backs on books. the doctor said this could be a defiency and ran some tests and they came out ok (for iron, etc.). could there be a medical condition that cause a child to chew wood? she has chewed her wood crib terribly
