Question

I have been having abdominal pain (sometimes sharp) for ...

Sent to Health Experts March 12, 2006 7:47 p.m.

I have been having abdominal pain (sometimes sharp) for about 4 days now. It seems to be centered under my rib cage on the left side. I have tried antacids which have not helped. I also started my period today and am having severe back pain as well now on top of the abdominal pain, however i am not sure the two are related as the abdominal pain is a little too high to be associated with menstrual pain. What could be the possible causes of my abdominal pain?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 29

Already Tried:
antacids and motrin 800mg

Hi,

I agree with you that based on your description, your left sided and under the rib cage kind of pain is probably not related to the menstrual cycle pain. You may have a kidney stone of kidney infection that is brewing.

I am wondering also if the severe back pain is something new or not because you mention that your cycle started and have the back pain too. Some women have referred pain with menstrual cycles and some women also have endometriosis and this causes lower back pain/abdominal pain as well.

So, to answer your question, based on description of pain site you mention being left sided and under rib cage, could be possible kidney stone, possible brewing of a kidney infection. Lower site abdominal pain on the lower left side could also be possible diverticulitis in the sigmoid colon.

In any case, if your pain continues to get worse or if you develop nausea, vomiting or fever, would definitely suggest seeking prompt medical care.

I would continue taking the Motrin per bottle instructions or for some people, they find that Aleve works better so might consider that. just do be sure to take either one with a milky drink, a snack or a meal because the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs often cause G.I. upset or irritation when taken on an empty stomach.

Also, to help alleviate your cramps and low back pain, it often helps to sit in a warm tub of water for 15-30 minutes at a time and alleviates cramping. Also, can use a heating pad to help.

I'd give the situation until tomorrow with that left sided under the rib pain and if you are not feelng better with this aspect, I'd contact the Dr. because if you have a kidney infection, you will need antibiotics for treatment to prevent damage to the kidney, tubes, etc.

I hope this information helps. If youhave no further questions, please click on the right green ACCEPT button. Also, postive FEEDBACK is always greatly appreciated. If there is anything I can help with, let me know. Hope you feel better real soon. Susan
