Last month I found a small lump in my breast. I went to my doctor and she immediately referred me to a radiologist for a mammogram and an ultrasound. Fortunately, it is a simple cyst.

I've read that caffeine can contribute to the formation of breast cysts. (Admittedly, I was hitting the caffeine pretty hard before I found this cyst.) I asked my doctor if I should cut back on caffeine and she shrugged and said it was up to me. Meanwhile, one of my friends had the exact thing happen to her and her doctor told her to cut out caffeine altogether. I am trying to figure out what I should do.

Hi,

Coffee, tea, cola, and chocolate all contain methylxanthines, which have been shown by some researcher experimentally to produce biochemical changes in breast tissue such as overproduction of fibrous tissue and cyst fluid. These changes are thought to increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
This issue is controversial among members of the medical community.

Reply to V. Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: Does that mean I should cut out caffeine altogether, or just exercist moderation (e.g., one glass of tea per day).

Hi,

Until they find out more about the coffee and similar drinks effect on breast tissue i think to drink one glass is reasonable.
