Sent to Health Experts March 16, 2006 1:55 p.m.

For 5 out of the last 6 weeks, my 3 year old son has been ill: coughing all night long, sometimes with a very high fever (105-106), and then dragging all day long rarely having any appetite at all. this goes on for a few days and then he seems better, but within a day or two, it starts all over again. I cannot take him to see a doctor because my husband is a chiropractor in a small town. What can be done to clear his lungs and stop this constant coughing?

Optional Information:
Male , Age: 3

Already Tried:
delsym (?) cough medicine

Hello - I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles, and I hope that things improve. As a physician, and with the description of your son's symptoms (he must be just miserable!), I must recommend that you take him to a pediatrician, and if that is not available then an emergency room of some sort. While I understand that it might be hard for you to do so (is it just due to limited access or is there another reason why you can't visit a physican?), in this scenario, with the recurrent fevers, and with the fevers at that high a temperature, you really must seek out some proper medical care.

I am not a pediatrician, but with fevers as high as 105/106 there are some serious concerns, there is a potential for permanent neurologic damage, and you should seek out immediate treatment. It is possible that your son is having recurrent infections, and that although his symptoms appear to get better, that he is, in fact, continually battling this infection. Persistent infection, as well, can also lead to permanent damage. Persistent ear infections can lead to permanent hearing loss, and can even turn into meningitis or encephalitis. There are many persistent infections that he could, in fact, be struggling with.

So please, take your son to see a pediatrician, or to an emergency room immediately. If you do not have the money for this, an emergency room is always available that will not deny you treatment regardless of your ability to pay. Some areas have assistance to provide care for low-income individuals as well, at no cost to you. The health of your son is more important than the cost.

In any event, take your son to the doctor and immediately. The key to solving this could be a simple as an antibiotic.

I hope that things work out, and take care

He told me to do EXACTLY what I said I could NOT do! I cannot go take him to a doctor because it would wipe out my husband's credibility as a chiropractor in this very small town. I sought help here because it is anoymous and thought that since no one is held accountable for the advice they give that somebody might be willing to offer suggestions as to how to clear up congestion in my son's lungs.

Hello - sorry if my answer dissatisfied you, I was just trying to give you the best advice that I know how. I do feel responsible to give you advice that is accurate, and that addresses responibly those symptoms that you have described in your son. In my opinion, he needs the care of a physician, a pediatrician, and promptly. These fevers can be an indicator of real disease, and can require treatment.

It is unfortunate that you perceive a connection between your husband's credibility and whether or not you seek any outside medical advice. From my point of view (and I think many would agree with me on this), a chiropractor is a valuable part of a health-care team, but not a substitute, on any level whatsoever, for the proper care of a physician or a pediatrician. I cannot, and I will not, recommend that you seek an alternative form of care when I think that your son, in fact, requires that of a physician.

Again, I am sorry if my suggestions upset you, feel free to seek alternate opinions.

Take care

This is my first time on this site and I want to get off of it already. I asked what I could do myself to help the healing process along and didn't get squat for an answer. I certainly did not intend to pay anyone $10 to get this advice: "Go to see a doctor"   get. Good grief!
