Question

I have started a new job and have not had medical insurance ...

Sent to Health Experts March 20, 2006 4:58 p.m.

I have started a new job and have not had medical insurance offered yet (two more months before eligiblilty). I since developed what looks like Strep throat (all symptoms appear to match) which lingered for over a week. The next door neighbor had some Keflex (Cephalexin 10 day dosage) so I started taking the ten day course of it. Since three days after taking the Keflex the white spots on my throat appeared the same or worse and my throat became sore again. So it appears the anitbiotic is doing very little if any good. Can I stop taking this antibiotic at this point or should I continue until the ten day course is consumed?

First of all I would never take another's meds. That aside. Keflex is used mainly for Urinary Tract infections, Ear infections, and skin infections. It is a non-specific antibiotic and not normally prescribed for Strep throat. Antibiotics weaken your immune system when taken. The problem is now that your system is use to the Keflex. And the cause of the suspected strep throat may now need a stronger dosage of a more specific medication.
It will not hurt you to continue or even stop it. But it will cause problems should you go on another antibiotic such as a broad spectrum.

I am not a Medical MD so I will not say to stop or continue. That decision is up to you. I would however advise going to a walk in clinic to have this checked out. The longer you wait the harder it will be to fight off.

Attached is a link for Keflex. Although it appears your already familar with it.

Again, my advise: Go to a walk-in clinic. Stay on or go off the med on your own decision.

BTW. It is illegal to take anohers prescribed medication so do not be walking around with the pescription in your pocket.
