Hi Clontz,
You need to consult a physician for an evaluation to determine if there is an underlying disease or disorder which is causing your hair to become thin and not growing! Sometimes, hypothryroidism is a cause for hair thinning or poor growth. There are other dieseases/disorders which have been linked to causing your reported hair problem. Sometimes, women have an endocrinology disorder such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), which causes hair thinning, loss and poor growth. I notice that your age is 45 yo and many women in perimenopausal years, which preface menopause, report hair becoming thin. Another possibility is you might simply have a hereditary predisposition to your hair being sparse.
Since there can be a wide variety of possible underlying causes known to cause hair thinning/loss/alopecia, I believe the first priority should be to have medical evaluation to determine if there is a medical cause which is culprit for your situation. I recommend that you consult an endocrinologist for a complete evaluation to include metabolic and hormonal lab studies. Two excellent books to read: The Hormonally Vulnerable Woman (2005) and The Truth ABout Women's Hormones (2000) both are written by renowned endocrinologist Geoffrey Redmond, MD, AACE available in paperback at the bookstores or perhaps local library and both address hair loss and endocrinology related disorder possibilities, alopecia in women, menopause, etc., etc., etc.
Rogaine is not always successful and if you have an underlying disorder/disease, then this is what must first be determined and addressed, then the appropriate treatment can be prescribed to correct the cause of your hair loss/thinning and thus promote a situation of improved health. You can find an endocrinologist in your area by going to this website which is: www.aace.com. This is the Web address to the American Academy of Clinical Endocrinologists. When you visit this site, you will be able to click on "Find a Dr." and can then look at your city and state and find an endocrinologist who is a Board certified member of the AACE in your area.
