Yes, especially if it swells when lifting, standing or coughing. Hernias may ache, especially with exertion, but should not be tender to touch, unless they are becomming irreducible or strangulated.
The pain is a warning sign, and you should see a Doctor. If the hernia strangulates (becomes trapped and loses blood supply) It is a surgical emergency.
A simple physical exam will determine if a hernia is present. He will probably recommend repair, and though it can usually be delayed for a short period, this is risky and not advisable unless recommended by the surgeon or physician.
In the mean time do not lift over five pounds, or exert yourself physically, and avoid coughing whenever possible.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation or abdominal pain with or without fever are medical emergencies.
Other possible causes for the swelling include swollen lymph nodes, or a cyst.
