Dear Judy, Thanks for the referral. I agree that you are probably on target here. OI is a the most likely possibility if no child abuse has occurred. Here is the best resource that discusses the differences between the two conditions (child abuse and OI) and how to get help in diagnosis. http://www.oif.org/site/PageServer?pagename=IsThis
Basically you need to contact the OI foundation, find the closest doctor specializing inthis condition and ask him to prepare a detailed medical document with the history, examination and a detailed family history. A skin biopsy can be done at a few specialized centres, but the reports can take upto 6 months ... far better of with a clinical diagnosis by an experienced physician. This is a well documented mistake and I am sure once the doc gives the all clear, you will get back the custody of the child. Just one more point, family history may not be always positive (approximately 25 percent of children with OI are born into a family with no history of the disorder), but if it is present then it can definitely help in clinching the diagnosis (Do
either parent, siblings, or extended family members have a history of
childhood fractures, spinal curvature, brittle teeth, hearing loss, or
other clinical features that might indicate that they have a mild case
of OI that was never diagnosed? It is not uncommon for the severity of
OI to vary even within the same family.)
