Question

baby needs help - no bruises but has fractures (could it be OI)

Sent to Health Experts April 25, 2006 10:35 p.m.

my baby is two months old and her mother is asian ...her two month shots were due 4-21-06 .prior to that 4-20 -06 in the evening i placed her on her stomach and she was mad ..she was clutching the sheet of the bed suddenly i heard a pop, i thought it was her wrist ...i turned her back over on her back ...she seemed ok....but i have three older children and something wasn't right had never heard a pop like that before..her shots were the next day...prior to that twoo weeks ago my oldest daughter was holding her up with her feet on her lap she wasn't crying the few days i notice she was favoring her left leg...we go to her doctor for her shots (4-21) the doctor said she was doing fine..but since i felt something was wrong I pointed out what had happen with her leg and arm..she gave us a order to get a ultra sound and x-ray. dated 4-24. On saturday 4-22 evening after feeding my daughter i handed her to her mother and her right foot got caught in her mom's gown and we heard a pop we thought it was her ankle she cried but she stopped after consoling her.but we were suprised there wasn't any pressure and we felt something is wrong with our daughter.we went for the x-ray and the ultra sound.the ultra sound was good. and since the x-ray was for the lower left extremity i ask if they would call and get a order for her left arm and right leg because we are worried that something is wrong. the doctor said he would be out in a minute to talk to us.when he came out to our suprise there were two police officer's with him. we were told that we were not being accused of anything but our baby had four fractures. (one in L shoulder, R thigh, Lower left leg w/c they say have been a week or more old; & a T12 fracture). Social worker came & after being interviewed, took our baby from us... We believed our baby has a possible OI (osteogenesis imperfecta), because her mother is Asian & she has the blue if not sometimes gray on her white part of the eye (sclera).. Mentioned to her delivery doctor & her pediatrician but said that it'll go away in time.. but any of my kids from my 1st marriage had any problem or color in their white part of their eyes... Besides after searching over the internet for weak or brittle bones, we read about this OI & read that there's a temporary brittle bone disease for infancy till 6 mos. of age.. which that means babies can outgrow or overcome it... She's in children's hosp. of Louisville, KY.. the social worker & police are trying to make it to be child abuse, but we know that there's something is wrong w/ our baby... do u have any suggestions on how we should proceed because we have to go to the court, for if we can't prove that she has this disease, we might not get our baby back... we go to court in the morning... and the social worker has already told us that she's going to request that our baby be made a ward of state.. This is a devastating to me & my wife as we love our baby so much & we want her back & moreso we can't be w/ her... I hope u can help us or someone in any way as we want our baby back & be treated right.. In addition, we also read that the fracture can be obtained w/out reason or cause.. we told them what happened but seems they want me to be the cause of my baby's fracture... pls. help us ... thank you... Charles & Rachel Baughn, (270-2983963), email: Customer (name blocked for privacy)@peoplepc.com... sorry for inconvenience but we need help & afraid that if our baby will not be diagnose or treated right or tell us properly how to care for our baby, this can cause her a problem later on in life.... thank you & we really appreciate any opinion/suggestion on how to go about this....

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 2.5 months

Already Tried:
they took our baby & we have no say.. they say CT scan is fine & will do it again... they say bone mineral is good... they say their going to do skin biopsy as we requested it after reading something about OI..

Dear Judy,
Thanks for the referral.
I agree that you are probably on target here. OI is a the most likely possibility if no child abuse has occurred.
Here is the best resource that discusses the differences between the two conditions (child abuse and OI) and how to get help in diagnosis.
http://www.oif.org/site/PageServer?pagename=IsThis

Basically you need to contact the OI foundation, find the closest doctor specializing inthis condition and ask him to prepare a detailed medical document with the history, examination and a detailed family history.
A skin biopsy can be done at a few specialized centres, but the reports can take upto 6 months ... far better of with a clinical diagnosis by an experienced physician.
This is a well documented mistake and I am sure once the doc gives the all clear, you will get back the custody of the child.
Just one more point, family history may not be always positive (
approximately 25 percent of children with OI are born into a family with no history of the disorder), but if it is present then it can definitely help in clinching the diagnosis (Do either parent, siblings, or extended family members have a history of childhood fractures, spinal curvature, brittle teeth, hearing loss, or other clinical features that might indicate that they have a mild case of OI that was never diagnosed? It is not uncommon for the severity of OI to vary even within the same family.)
