The most common treatment for Bells Palsy is prednisone to reduce inflammation of the facial nerve that is affected. Recently there has been some use of the antiviral acyclovir since it is thought that a virus is the culprit in inflaming the nerve. This is not a new drug, rather a new use for the drug. It's gained popularity in recent few years for treatment of HIV infection, chicken pox, shingles. Other than this, I am not aware of any others. Has she had any medical treatment for this? Or just a watch and wait approach?

Reply to Judy's Post: Thank you for your quick response and for the information. My mom has lost her job and has a 6 month wait before she can be covered to go back to the doctor. She hasn't had any additional treatment since the surgery. She did delay in going to the doctor in the first place... I want to say it was 1-2 weeks before she saw a doctor initially. They told us then that if we would have got to them within 48 hours they would have had more treatment options. Thanks again! Please let me know if you have any additional information. andikydd@hotmail.com

Relist: I still need help.
My RN had asked some questions which I responded to, and haven't yet heard back on. Please forward this back to her. Thank you!

Truthfully, after 18 months, I'm not sure if anything can be done. The treatment is most effecctive in the first few days of the problem I will be working at the hospital tomorrow and will try to pick the brains of the neurologist that is on. Maybe he/she will have heard of something. I did research the issue after I heard from you and could find nothing new.
