I am a 47 year old male in relatively good health. On Thursday morning I woke up and noticed that my throat was sore. The pain was severe when I tried to swallow my coffee or water. I took three Advil and drank some cold water and the pain subsided. I also noticed a foul taste, like a discharge in my mouth. The pain never went completely away but the ache was slight. On Friday morning I awoke, again with a sore throat, but this time there was a 1.5 inch circle of blood on my pillow where my mouth would be while I was sleeping.
My temperature is normal, 97.9 degrees.

What might this be?

I still have pain and it is focus in the left side of my throat. What so you need to know?
