Question

30 years use of lorazepam

Sent to Health Experts June 20, 2006 12:39 p.m.

Can 30 years use of Lorazepam dose 2mg at nite have reverse effects. It was 30 years it was first prescribed to my mum for anxiety and insomnia. After having a urine infection in January of this year she complained the lorazepam was no longer working. Her anxiety came back strongly and has been recently put on 1mg 3 times a day, total 3mg. (5months after infection). She says she feels doomed and having suicidal thoughts, she has very little sleep yet again. Is it possible the Lorazepam is now being rejected from her body or possibly she needs a higher dose? It makes her feel contstantly sick, she has aches in her arms, hot and cold shivers. Is there an answer???

Ms C,
I try to avoid long term use of benzos because of their addictive potential. One approach here would be to wean the ativan (slowly taper the dose down to zero) and start another approach for treating anxiety and depression. A psychiatrist may be the best person to help here. There are a large number of better anxiolytics that you should have her discuss with the doctor.
