My wife recently has a mamogram exam. The results showed a nodule in her left breast. The nodule is less than 1 CM in suze. The radiolgist wrote on the report to the DR. that he believes that the nodule is benign that is why my wife had to wait to have the Biopsy instead of going right away. My wife is 44 years old. She is scheduled for a a biopsy this friday. My question is are the majority of these nodules cancerous and can the radioligist tell from the pictures whether or not they are benign or cancerous ?

Hi

It is true that 80 to 85% of all breast nodules are benign. As un mentioned abt biopsy in biopsy the doctor insert a thin needle into a cyst and aspirate any fluid, both to examine the fluid and to eliminate the cyst. If the fluid is clear and the cyst disappears, it will probably be diagnosed as a benign cyst and will require no further treatment. The fluid will be checked by cytology - microscopic examination of cells within the fluid.

and yes mammogram can easily find the lump and its size and tell abt its mailgnancy

Relist: I still need help.
This past thursday my wife had a mamogram. The results of the mamogram and subsequent sonogram led to the radiologist's determomation that my wife has a nodule. The biopsy is scheduled for this friday with the results coming 7/5/06. Needless to say my wife and I are extremly nervous with all of the bad thoughts rushing through our minds. I was hoping if you could answer some questions so I could put hr mind at ease.

The radiologist said the nodule is less than 1 CM.

My wife is 44 years old.
She had a fibroadema 4 years ago in her right breast.
is there a differance between a nodule and a fibroedema?

can the radiolosgist tell if the the nodule is benign of malignant?

I believe that the radiologist wrote down on the report that he believes that it is benign. He did tell my wife to go ahead on vacation but not to wait to long to get it checked out. Is this good or bad ?

Are all nodules cancerouse?

Should we be concerned that they wish to do a biopsy instead of the aspiration ( with needle)

I apolgise for my desperation but Im lost.

Lou

Hello Lou,

I do agree with Dr. Aora, but I thought I would jump in as I have had personal experience related to breast nodules.

I know how frightening this is for both of you.
A radiologist is often able to determine at the first view of a film if cancer is present.

I would venture to say that the nodule is another fibroadenoma as your wife has has a previous history of one.

I discovered a lump, had a mammo, and went straight for a biopsy, which turned out to be a benign fibroadenoma. Three years later, I had a lump in the same area, mammo, and biopsy once again-- another benign fibroadenoma. Four years later, I found a lump in the other breast, mammo and no biopsy. Decided to wait and keep an eye on it. The surgeon felt, it was not necessary to proceed with surgical intervention. Three years later, so far so good. Mammo shows no changes.

All nodules are not malignant. Nodule is a medical turn for lump.

I prefer going straight to biopsy as it is more conclusive. This past March, 21 year old daughter had a thyroid nodule, had a needle aspiration and the pathologist sent it back as inconclusive as to what it was, he told me in person, it was a waste of time. In April, she went to surgery and the nodule was removed and deemed benign.

Friday, must seem like an eternity, but will be here before you know it. I wish you and your wife the best. Please loet me know of any questions or concerns youmay have during the week, I come online a couple of times a day to check questions. Also, let me know next weekend how things go and if you have any other concerns.
