Question

I am 33 year old female. I have been suffering from joint ...

Sent to Health Experts June 26, 2006 1:24 a.m.

I am 33 year old female. I have been suffering from joint pain on my left side only ( jaw, hip, knee, wrist and lower back). After seeing an orthopedic Dr. for a year I went to see an Arthritis Specialist and he diagnosed me with psoratic arthritis. 2 weeks after starting treatment for the psoratic arthritis (sulfazidine, ultracet for pain and 4 days of prednisone) which was 1 week ago I started having extreme upper abdomen pain and spasms in my upper back. After enduring this for a day and a half I went to my local ER and come to find out I had blood in my stool. I was admitted for 3 days and my H & H was monitored ( 16 & 42 when in ER, 11 & 31 when discharged). I was diagnosed , after a scope was performed, with a large gastric ulcer that was actively bleeding. I was released 1 week ago yesterday and have been taking Protonix twice a day. My question is, I am still experiencing severe upper abdomen pain and the feeling of something trying to come back up my throat. The puzzling part is just minutes after the abdomen pain starts I have the extreme pain in my left upper back. It seems to be in the area between the sholder blade and the spine on the upper left part of my back. It feels as if I've been doing some heavy lifting of as if I've been slumping my back for hours but I haven't. I don't understand what could be going on. My gastrointeroligist does not believe the back pain has anything to do with the ulcer but it was one of the symptoms that started this whole ordeal about a week and a half ago. I don't know who to go see for this problem. What do you think it could be? I have also been experiencing tightness in my calves and fingers just the past 2 nights. Could this all be related? Could somebody be missing something more serious?

The only thing I have tried is going to Doctors and having x-rays after injections after MRI's. I do not know what else to do.

You probably have a few things going on. The arthritis is a given and the treatment for that could have given you a new, or agravated an existing ulcer. The protonix is a good move and especially taking it twice a day. It does take a few weeks or even months to heal that ulceration. The pain in your back could be referred pain from your eroded esophogus. If x-rays and MRIs were clear, I wouldn't worry about tumors or cancer or anything. If your activity level is staying up good and the pain medication helps keep your pain under control, you are probably going the right coarse of treatment. The tightness in your calves and fingers... The calves concern me, it could be some sort of blood clot. There is a simple way to test for that however. If you can flex your "toes towards your nose" and you aren't having severe pain or heat, it wouldn't be a blood clot. The tightness in your fingers could be more joint pain rearing its ugly head. More blood tests and possibly a CAT scan from your arthritis specialist or even an internal medicine doctor could help rule more things out.   I am concerned hearing that you are having all this joint and muscle pain. Could it be Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, or Multiple Sclerosis? Those kind of things could be ruled out by working with an internist (internal medical doctor.) Hope this helps!
