I fell and tore the cartilege in my knee. An orthopedist told me he would not operate at my age (80) but recommended I take celebrex. I am in pain most of the time, but I am not sure that I wish to take celebrex after reading about the possible side effects. What do you think I should do?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 80

Already Tried:
I am using Tylenol but it doesn't help much.

Hello,

I would get a second opinion from another orthopedic specialist as you are in so much pain.

If you are in relatively good health, with no medical conditions that would prohibit surgery, I do not understand why the doctor would not take you to surgery. Often, the arthroscopy is done with local anesthesia and light sedation.

I have had patients that have had total knee replacements at your age. A knee replacement is far more invasive than an atrhoscopy.

If you would like me to provide you with a list of board certified orthopedic surgeons in your area, please give me your city, state & zip code.

Celebrex is still prescribed, and the FDA warned patients about all NSAIDS. THe precautions pertain to patients who have had heart surgery.
