Sent to Health Experts June 28, 2006 12:50 a.m.

I have been having a lot of trouble swallowing and it has been getting worst everyday. I also had other symptoms so please read my previous post: http://www.justanswer.com/JA/ASP_A/T_443467/TR/hello-ive.htm
As you can see the doctor thought it was a good idea to get my endoscopy appointment moved up sooner. I called this morning but they said they can't unless they get some cancellations. I even mentioned my condition. What do you suggest I do?

REPLIED Check Mark

Hello,

I have to agree with everything Family Physician recommended.

If you believe you can not wait for the procedure, you could go to to the ER. I can not guarantee that this will work; however, if the ER doctor determines you are in enough distress, he may be able to have the procedure moved up.

My concern is that you called the office, asked if you procedure can be moved up, but who made that decision? Did the receptionist or medical assistant give your message to the doctor? Sometimes you have to be persistant, and let the staff know that you expect a call back from the doctor.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

No I didn't ask them to give my message to the doctor. I believe I talked to a receptionist.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

In my opinion, the receptionist was negligent.   Under no circumstances should she have made the medical decision that your procedure could not be moved up, especially inview of the fact that you are experiencing difficulty swallowing. It would be her position to notify the doctor, and he would decide if it was prudent to try to fit you on the endoscopy schedule as an emergnecy basis, or at least have you come into the office for a recheck.

I suggest you call the office tomorrow, leave a message stating you are experiencing ectreme difficulty in swallowing and would like a return call from the doctor, or if need be an appointment.
If for some reason, you do not hear from the doctor, then you could certainly go to the ER.

I personally, would let the doctor know I was not all that pleased that the receptionist made a judgement call.
