My 59 year old husband has been a recreational pot ...

My 59 year old husband has been a recreational pot smoker for about 40 years now; about 4 joints a week. He will undergo aortic valve replacement surgery on July 11. Is this something his surgeon needs to know? Are there contraindications for continuing? Should he stop prior to surgery? Now?

Yes - it is important that your physicians know of ALL your medical conditions, habits etc.

Smoking (ANYTHING) can increase the risk of complications related to surgery - since it can influence lung function.

I would definitely stop the smoking (tobacco and/or marijuana) prior to surgery AND let your doctor know and let the decision up to him if he wants to delay the surgery. I think if he stopped now, there probably would not be a problem - but that is best answered by the surgeon who is responsible for his care.
