Question

Femoral rotation

Sent to Health Experts July 07, 2006 8:43 a.m.

Hello, My name is MaryAnne. I am 40. I have been having problems with my feet turning inward especially the right foot. When I drive the car my heel is on the corner of the gas pedal and my toes under the break. I believe this is the cause of two car accidents that I have had in the past 2 years. Also, have problems tripping over my own 2 feet and have many back strain injuries at work. I am a nurse's aide. I went to an orthopedist who told me I have femoral rotation and said it would require a major operation to fix this. I am having trouble finding info on femoral rotation in adults. Can you give me more info.

Ma'am as you mentioned most of the information is indeed on Children due to the fact that this is normally found before adulthood. I can indeed also see where this would be a problem with driving. You may also fall under the ADA rulings for handicapped person.

I will attach some links to help and better assist you as much as possible. Your orthopedic surgeon should have info for you as well.

I hate to just give you links but very little is really out there on adult foot rotation. From reading over these I indeed see the concern on driving.

I believe your Orthopedic Specialist may also provide better updated treatment and procedural information.

I wish you the best.

sorry in the delay to get back to you. I was out of town.

I am sorry I was going on your original question of:

Can you give me more info. And that was all that was requested. I gave you links on the medical condition.

You also stated:I am having trouble finding info on femoral rotation in adults. which is true because this is a condition that normally is present in children and taken care of when still a child. It is not something that just up and happens to someone who is an adult.

Now that you have clarified the question I will be more then glad to continue to assist you.

I still am finding that most all information is related to children and children's recovery. Also people with Cerebral Palsy.

There are a few notes of adults having this but most are often done during childhood when the healing process is much faster and successful.

The following is what I am able to find, locate or tell you.

There are many months of therapy to recovery.

Following a femoral osteotomy alone, the vast majority of patients will be fully rehabilitated within six months.

The most common problem requiring a femoral osteotomy is where the femur is abnormally twisted causing the foot to be turned either in wards or out wards.

This "abnormal ante version" is corrected by a rotation osteotomy, guided for precision by pre-operative CT scans.

The femur is cut, rotated to the correct angle, then fixed in place with plates and screws.

After a year the bone will have healed, and the plate and screws are removed.

Multiple operations are normally needed to complete this procedure.

An Osteotomy, of any kind, is an operation where a bone is cut, usually realigned in some way, and then re-fixed to heal in its new configuration.

The Femoral Osteotomies described in this section are, as the name suggests, osteotomies carried out on the Femur (thigh bone) to correct a number of conditions.

Some operations are specifically named, others are referred to by the condition they fix, such as S.U.F.E. (Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis).

Complete medical procedure for Osteotomy Surgery:

An osteotomy is a surgical procedure in which a bone is divided or a piece of bone is excised. Typically, the procedure is performed to correct a deformity. For example, the procedure may be performed on a femur and/or tibia to correct deformities such as misalignments in the legs that lead to bow legs (outward bowing of the legs) and knock knees (inward bowing of the legs).

I hope that I have better assisted and if not then please let me know.

Relist: I still need help.
Hip Clinic is very helpful site, thank you. Is femoral rotation osteotomy done on adults or children only? Also, just wondering if this surgery will improve my life or just cause me pain.

as I tried to tell you the other day and in the postings at the very beginning. This is normally a procedure noticed and done primarily in children and can be done also in adults but with more rehab needed after surgery. Children's bones are much more adaptable to regrowth at an young age.

As the information implies this is a very radical and lengthy surgery.

The last part to your answer I believe is both. Due to the number of surgeries and time. If successful then your quality of life would indeed be better. This should have been done at 2-5 years of age.
