Dear Lady,

I have been asked to contact you, since I am a nephrologist (medical kidney doctor).

I will do the best I can to help you, but please understand that I cannot examine you, order tests, or review you medical records.

  • When did this start?
  • Is it constant or episodic?
  • When is it located?
  • Does it radiate anywhere else?
  • Have you ever had it before?
  • Is there anything that makes it better?
  • Is there anything that makes it worse?
  • Have you ever injured your back?
  • Do you have difficulty walking?
  • Do you have difficulty passing urine?
  • Do you have pain/discomfort/burning when passing urine?
  • Do you have a fever (elevated temperature)?

If there is anything you can think of in addition that might help me help you, add it to your reply.

My primary activity is teaching, so there may be some delay in my getting back to you.

Reply to Teaching Doc's Post: This started about 5 years ago, it comes on about once a week and last 48 to 72 hours. The pain goes away as fast as it comes on. It feels like I'm in hard labor the pain never subsides it stays constant. It is located in left kidney region. I do have 2 ruptured discs, so I have been to a nuerosurgeon and a urologist. Each told me the other is the cause. I have tried to pin point what triggers the pain, sometimes It comes on when I have a few drinks, sometimes I think soda may inflame it. When it comes on nothing makes it feel better and nothing makes it feels worse. The pain is so severe that I cannot consentrate on anything. I don't have pain urinating however I feel that I have to go more often, But I don't know if it is because I drink more water because I take more somas & Percocets that I get thirstier. I don't think I have a fever with this but I never took my temp. I just know that when I get this pain I do not want to live. My family physician is baffled,
