Question

Cervical central canal Stenosis

Sent to Health Experts July 24, 2006 7:33 p.m.

I just received the MRI findings for my 15 year old football star. Please help, in tears and want to know ...
FINDINGS:
There is a straightening of the cervical vertebral bodies with loss of normal lordosis, likely due to muscle spasm and/or patient positioning. There is no spondylolisthesis. The cervial cord demostrates normal signal and caliber throughtout. The visualized posterior fossa and crainiovertebral junction are unremarkable.

There is a suggestion of shallow posterior annular bulges noted from C3-4 through C6-7 with borderline central canal stenosis without cord compression or significant neural foraminal compromise.

Incidental note is made of an approximately 1.5cm cystic-appearing lesion likely in the left sublingual space, slightly anterior and medial to the left submandibular gland. Note is made of T1 shortening suggesting proteinaceous material.

IMPRESSION:
1: The suggestion of shallow disc bulges with borderline central canal stenosis from C3-4 through C6-7. No discrete disc herniation. No cord compression or significant neural foraminal copromise.
2. Straightening of the cervical spine.
3.Approximately 1.5 cm cystic-appearing lesion that appears to be in the left sublingual space. Recommend dedicated CT of the soft tissues of the neck with contrast to try to better characterize. Differential considerations include a dermoid/epidermoid cyst, a unilocular ranula/retention cyst, or a lymphangioma. diffuse T1 shortening favors a dermoid cyst.

Why was the MRI done in the first place? Did he have an injury? Was he having pain/numbness/weakness?

He was hit on the football field and no pain or or numbness but he did loss strength for a day or so. This also happened approximately 3-4 years ago but I guess the doc didn't think anything was wrong...Trainers at the school are referring to it as a stinger. so his trainer ordered the MRI
