Rash on my neck

Sent to Health Experts August 03 11:02 AM

I cut myself shaving two and a half months ago. I put some of my mom's Mary Kay skin lotion on it to try and sooth it. I immediately had a reaction to the lotion. My mom said the lotion was about eight years old, so it probably went bad. Red spots broke out all across my neck. I still have the reaction today, and it is about the same. My neck is red and irritated and there are red spots all across my neck. It itches a little bit too. I tried not shaving for periods of time. That helped a little bit. I tried hydrocortisone and benadryl. They made the skin on my neck more red. I went to a dermatologist and he said I have no permanent damage. He gave me so Chlorostat? and oxy-something? lotions which helped a little bit. At least they didn't make my neck more red. Shaving doesn't help the reaction on my neck, but I have to shave. Is there any other medical remedy I can try to reverse the reaction on my neck, or should I go see a dermatologist again?

Hello,

You are suffering from a condition called 'Contact dermatitis'. This occurs due to an allergic reaction when the skin comes in contact with a foreign substance.

Since the reaction is due to a reaction to a substance that has acted as an irritant on your skin, you must use a corticosteroid to bring it down. An ointment containing Betamethasone Diproprionate available as Diprolene ( a prescription drug) will work well. Lotriderm ointment with a lesser strength of betamethasone is also available as an OTC medicine , but this contains an antifungal medicine also.

Apply ice packs on the skin to cool it. You can also appy calamine lotion as a cooling agent. Antihistaminics like benadryl must be taken orally.

If the redness does not go away in 1 weeks time, please see a ddermatologist again.

Please see the following for more details on contact dermatitis:

I hope this helps.
