Question

Is PARTIAL hip replacement (only ball replaced) an accepted medical pr

Sent to Health Experts August 09, 2006 6:22 p.m.

My 88 year-old mother, who has battled rheumatoid arthritis for years, fractured her left hip in a fall. The surgeon repaired the break by replacing the ball but leaving the original socket. Now, nearly 6 months later, she continues to experience such severe pain in the left leg and hip that she continues to refuse therapy or to walk any further than the bathroom.

Could her surgeon's failure to 'plate' her hip socket to match the new ball on her tibia be the reason for this unusually lengthy and harsh pain? Is a partial hip replacement such as my mother received at age 88 an accepted and/or preferred method for correcting a break?
