My daughter is 16 and takes extra calcium ...

Sent to Health Experts August 09 09:25 PM

My daughter is 16 and takes extra calcium because she had a low bone density scan last year. She was on growth hormone for 2 years (13-15) but has been off of it since May 2005. She has a nice straight spine, but a couple of weeks ago I was walking behind her and noticed her neck seems to bend a bit to the right, rather than being straight over her spine. I don't know if this is a posture issue or something else.   I haven't said anything to her about this yet, but a couple of days ago she started complaining about the left side of her neck hurting - around the back of her left shoulder. There is a little swelling, too. We've been putting ice on it but haven't noticed any improvement yet. Is this something I should be concerned about? If I need to take her to a Dr., what type of Dr. do you recommend? Her Endocronologist, regular MD or bone Dr.? Thanks so much!

You should take her to be seen by an Orthopedic specialist although if the has a regular Endocronologist then this is a good idea and then if they feel she needs further evaluation then they can refer her to an orthopedic specialist in your area. If she has had problems in the past due to low bone density then it would be wise to have further evaluation. It can be a posture problem with teenagers but if she has been having some neck pain that has not been able to be relieved by icing it, also try some heat and some anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprophen to see if this seems to help until you can have her seen but I would recommend this diue to her medical history. And you are so very welcome, if I can be of further help please let me know.

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: Thank you - Have you seen this type of neck curving before? Do you have any ideas on what it might be?

Yes I have and this can be due to muscle or tissue damage even if no signifigant injury has been seen, it can also be related to the structure of her bones and spine in the upper part of her neck and also even a possible neurological problem as well. Posture can cause this to become worse through time and this is something that she may need to work on to not allow for further health issues down the road. If this is caused from her nerves it could possibly be a pinched nerve so they should perform an MRI to determine if there is any damage and they may also want to have her go through some physical therapy as well. And you are so very welcome.
