REPLIED Check Mark

Ibuprofen for the fever, keep her warm, give plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
The shivers are from the high fever and can indicate a serious infection.
How high is the fever and what have you given to bring it down?
Most important, what other symptoms does she have -
Any pain in the abdomen, flank, etc.?
Any difficulty urinating?
Any nausea?
Any underlying medical conditions - diabetes, HIV, etc.?

High fevers are generally caused in an adult by things like kidney infection, gall bladder infection, serious lung infection.

She should be seen by a doc in the emergency room to have cultures done to determine the source of the infection and the proper treatment.

She was at the doctor yesterday for her check-up. She recieved a tetanus shot yesterday and everything else checked out fine. She does take regular daily medication for her thyroid. The doctor also did bloodwork yesterday. My wife said that she had some blood spotting in her urine earlier. Her fever was at 103.7 earlier and now at 102.2. ??????

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Was she at the doc for the fever or did the fever start after the tetanus shot? Why did she get the tetanus shot? Did she have a recent injury? Fever is not a commom side effect of tetanus, usually you would have just soreness and redness at the area of the injection.

Blood in the urine can certainly indicate a urinary tract infection. 103.7 is high for an adult and indicates a more serious infection, such as pyelonephritis (kidney infection). This can become very serious if the organism that caused it enters the bloodstream itself.

The doc you saw yesterday I presume will not be in the office today, but he should be reachable through the answering service at the regular office number. They can page him and he or a covering physician should call you back (it's what you pay them for!).

If you cannot reach the doc, I would consider going to the emergency room for a urine culture, blood culture, chest x-ray, ultrasound of kidneys and gall bladder, and some labwork. You do not want her to be in this condition until Monday and she should have antibiotics before then as well!

She just went to the doc for a regular check-up. Her last tetanus shot was @13 YEARS AGO.
