One possible cause of the pain you describe may be Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). You may also be experiencing other symptoms like hoarseness, or trouble swallowing.
GERD is caused by muscles in the lower esophagus not closing tightly, allowing acid to move into the esophagus from the stomach. Lying down makes it worse. You would experience more symptoms in the morning because when you lie down, the acid moves into the esophagus over-night.
It is recomended to raise the head of your bed with either with blocks under the matress, or you can also purchase a foam wedge. You can sometimes find foam wedges at medical supply stores. Also avoid eating 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.
There are certain foods that can make GERD worse, like spicy food, chocolate, caffeine, fatty foods, or acidic food like orange juice. These should be avoided or eaten in moderation.
Over the counter antacids may help. Since your pain is persistent, you should go see a doctor. Your doctor can also prescribe medication if necessary.
Untreated GERD can develope into ulcers, scars, and changes in the lining of the esophagus.
