Really the best way to handle leg swelling is to elevate the legs, and if necessary, stockings can be worn that are a fairly snug fit (not too tight, however - if you have access to medical supplies, there are special stockings called "Ted hose" that can help). And keeping off of his feet will also keep the swelling down to a minimum, and help relieve the swelling that is already present.
If the swelling becomes too severe and doesn't improve with the above, then he might benefit from a prescription medication to help remove excess fluid. Diuretics are a good example, and depending on the cause and his health otherwise, they may or may not be appropriate.
But first try elevation, compression, and keeping activity to a minimum. Keeping the temperature down in the house (if you are in a temperate, warm climate) can also help sometimes.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions - I'm more than happy to try and help. I hope the radiation and chemotherapy are helping, and I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis.
Take care - Dr. Fay
