Dose my wife have an infection in the vigina or any where?
Sent to Health Experts September 27 11:00 PM

My wife just lost a baby at the 38th week, when she went into labor everything was find until when the doctor said that she was bleeding a little too much. So at this time the doctor went and put a piece of cloth or whatever it was inside. Nine hours later it was removed by the nurse and the other doctor that was there during labor. This was all on 09/01/06. Well yesterday 09/26/06 my wife felt something coming out of her vigina, I looked and saw apiece of something coming out, so she pulled it out. That's when we saw something that looked like a piece of the placenta come out . She opened it up and saw that it was another piece of the cloth. Now my question is "Can this cause an infection to her and what are the symtoms?

This would possibly be a piece of the uterine cloth that was used to help stop the flow of blood when they saw that she was bleeding too much. These are sterile cloths and should not cause any infection and are usually passed by the vagina within a short time after miscarriage if not during the stay. There is a chance though of infection with any foreign object left in the vagina and if there is infection there would be possible abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, or continued heavy bleeding and these would be signs that medical care is needed as antibiotics can help to stop the infection. If she is concerned and I can understand she should contact her physician and ask if they can prescribe a round of antibiotics in the case that any infection could be developing and that would help to fight any infection at a faster rate.

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: even if tha cloth smelled like it was rotten it would not cause an infection in her blood system?

It will have a bad smell due to the bleeding and the amount of time that it was inside of her vagina and yes this can cause an infection so it is important that if there was a bad smell to the cloth and if you still have it that you contact them tomorrow and have her seen for further evaluation. It is possible that it could be tissue from the scar tissue involved in the miscarriage but it would still be best that they be notified tomorrow since this has occurred as the sooner antibiotics are started the better they can fight any possible infection and reduce any further problems that could occur.

Then there is less of a chance that infection could occur, it would have a bad smell if associated with any blood in the vaginal area but if she is having no odor now then the chances greatly lessen that she could have infection present.

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: she has an appointment in 15 days for the post-partum check-up should she wait for then to get an answer or go A.S.A.P? And do they check for that at that time?

Yes they will check if she lets them know what was found to make sure no infection is present and with losing the baby they will most likely check for any abnormaility in her vaginal area and perform a pap smear as well. I would honestly out of concern not wait until 15 days pass but call them in the morning to let them know about the cloth and your concern as most likely they will want to see her or will call in a round of antibiotics and let you know if she will be okay to wait until her post partum check-up.
