THIS MORNING I COUGHED UP FRESH BLOOD. What would cause this?
Sent to Health Experts October 22 01:11 PM

I sleep with a bi-pap machine. My lungs did feel congested this morning and that was the reason I was coughing.

Reply to V. Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: Due to swelling in my ankles and legs, physicians began running tests. CAT-Scan was clear, lung x-ray was dense with lots of markings, echo-cardiogram was fine, then a sleep study test showed 65% oxygen absorportion 30% of the time and 80% absorporation 30% of the time; with 15 sleep apneas in a 7 hour period. Started with a C-PAP and due to low numbers, changed to Bi-PAP and increased pressure to 18/7. Absorbtion is now 90's%. I quit smoking 14 years ago. I am on Lipitor 80 mg; Welchol 625 mg/x4; norvasc 10 mg; and HTVC. Chest x-ray was in June. The bi-pap has not reduced the swelling in my legs, however, exercise does. I am obese; 4'11" and 222 lbs.

Hi,

You coughed fresh blood this morning possibly because of left heart failure. It is possibly made worse by sleep apnea raising your blood pressure. To prevent this to happen again your blood oxygen saturation needs to be monitored and it needs to be kept close to normal oxygen saturation. Your blood pressure is also needs to be monitored and if necessary the dose of the blood pressure medications to be increased. Please see your doctor for an evaluation . Swelling of your leg possibly due to heart failure caused by sleep apnea.
