Question

sharp pain when breathing

Sent to Health Experts March 27, 2005 9:32 p.m.

I have this sharp pain in my back towards the center on my right side. Every time I breath I feel this sharp pain in this place on my back. I also it in my arms too. What could it be. Maybe my diet caused some sort of blockage in an artery, or a vein popped, or what?

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Your symptoms are serious enough to seek medical attention ASAP.  Sharp pain upon taking a breath can be an indication of pleurisy.  Pleurisy is an inflammation of the lining around your lungs.   With pleurisy, there are inflammed layers of membranes around your lungs that rub up against eachother when you inhale or exhale causing a sharp pain when taking a breath, and is often painful my coughing, sneezing, etc.  Treatment depends on the underlying cause.

Your symptoms could be atypical chest pain related to your heart.  (atypical meaning that it is not the "typical" signs of cardiac related chest pain.)

Either way, it is imperative that you seek medical attention immediately.  Best wishes.  Please give update.
