Wrist Pain

About a few weeks a go I started getting really sharp pains in my left wrist. The pain starts right under my thumb and sometimes it travels all the way up to my elbow. Last week my left hand started shaking and the shaking lasted for almost five minutes. What could be the cause of this and should I go to the hospital?
