A bitter taste in the mouth is caused by bile that has regurgitated into the mouth. This can occur usually because of major intestinal congestion. Instead of moving downward, parts of the intestinal is backed up and brings irritating substances into the upper regions of the gastro-intestinal tract. This can make your mouth susceptible to infection. If this condition continues I suggest that you make an appointment with your physician for further testing as there are many medications that can help correct this problem before it causes other damage.

Reply to cheryl kauffman's Post: Thank you for your answer. I am trying to understand. I have had regular bowel movements, so how can the intestine back up? Also, can this clear up on its own? And if so, how long do you suggest I wait before seeing a doctor?
Thanking you in advance

Just one more follow up question. Is this potentially serious or more likely benign?

It can be serious if left to continue without any kind of treatment. It is not usually thought to be serious as long as the condition has not been left to continue for a considerable amount of time, then you could end up with abdominal problems. If you do not let the condition continue most likely it is something that they can treat successfully with the aid of medication if not left to grow worse or cause damage to other organs. I wouldn't panick or anything just do not let it continue and you should be fine :o)

Much much luck to you!!
