Ford Escort with P0171 engine code

I have a hard time concentrating when I am not interested in a subject. I zone out or start to fall asleep. Is there medication I can take so I can be attentive?

I have 2002 Ford Escort with P0171 engine code (bank 1 running lean) and a service engine soon light on. The car is also idling rough and the gas mileage has suffered. I have already replaced both oxygen sensors and the mass air flow censor 3 times. Auto Zone suggested new spark plugs even though I just replaced them within 5K miles or replacing spark plug wires. I just want to know exactly what it is without paying $100 for a diagnostic at the dealership.

Dear bolwingmetalgod,

Which question is being answered here?

You have a question about health, and a separate question regarding your Ford Escort.

Since this is the health section, I will answer the Health Question you present.

The main thing is knowing what the underlying cause is for your inattentiveness.

If you are simply not interested in the subject matter and it bores you, there is not much you can do, outside of diet, exercise, and vitamin supplements that will help you.

However if there is an underlying medical diagnosable cause, then a physician may prescribe a course of treatment to help you overcome that.

For example, the following conditions may require medical attention and may cause you to become tired and disinterested when trying to focus in a classroom situation.

1. Adult ADD

2. diabetes

3. hyper and hypo glycemia

4. nutritional deficiencies and diet

5. depression

The list is not exhaustive.

You would need to be physically examined by a doctor and have lab work performed in order to definitively treat this and get the right medication if indicated.

In the mean time, if you are intent on self treatment, then check your diet:

cut down on carbs and increase protein

take a multivitamin,

exercise regularly in the early morning (this gets the endorphins going and helps create energy for the day). (when you exercise, besides endorphins, your body produces ATP, which is energy on the cellular level)

drink plenty of water.

If these diet and exercise changes do not help, then by all means see your physician.

This takes care of your health question.

If you still need the car question answered, my advice is to post a new question in cars, or I can ask the admin to transfer the question as a new posting.

Please let me know your intention here.

Reply to Edward Johnson's Post: I thought that I had changed where to post this. The medical question is years old and not an issue. This is not what I was looking for.
