My mother is 93, & has had Scabies since last may. She was misdiagnosed & when they figured out what was wrong, she recieved the right meds. When, after several months, she was still itching, we went back to the dermatologist, & they took a closer look. She has the type that is resistant to the meds she was on, so they've tried something stronger. All treatments finished 2 weeks ago, & she's still itching very badly. How much longer should the itching last? And what can we use to help her from suffering?

Scabies have a life cycle that can frustrate treatments.

Lets address the treatment protocol first:

It is not uncommon for a practitioner to miss, that you should do a second application of the medication 72 hours after the first. and again in seven days. This is so that any hatching eggs can be killed.

Secondly, if you have not treated the carpets, rugs, mattresses, bedding, and pets if any, then your mother will simply become reinfected. Treatment of bedding like sheets is simply a matter of washing everything in hot water. Vacuuming rugs however, needs to be a daily event for about a week to 10 days.

OK now the itching:

Oatmeal baths sometimes work for relieving itching of this type. You can bye the kind used in the baths at a health store. Occasionally CVS and other pharmacies carry this product.
