Hi,

H. pylori infection is most likely acquired by ingesting contaminated food and water and through person to person contact.Ttwo or more antibiotics usually are given together with a PPI and/or bismuth containing compounds to eradicate the bacterium. (Bismuth and PPIs have anti-H. pylori effects.) Examples of combinations of medications that are effective are:
·     a PPI, amoxicillin (Amoxil) and clarithromycin (Biaxin)
·     a PPI, metronidazole (Flagyl), tetracycline and bismuth subsalicylate
The infection is more common in crowded living conditions with poor sanitation. In countries with poor sanitation, 90% of the adult population can be infected. Infected individuals usually carry the infection indefinitely unless they are treated with medications
The most recently-developed test for H. pylori is a test in which the presence of the bacterium can be diagnosed with a sample of stool. The test uses an antibody to H. pylori to determine if H. pylori is present in the stool. If it is, it means that H. pylori is infecting the stomach.

Reply to Vahe Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: I also asked about children and if they can be infected by an adult that has it and how can an adult pass it to a child. If the previous is the case what tests can be done on a child under 7 years of age and are they tested when an adult member of the family is diag. with h-pylori. Very concerned for grandchildren

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),

It is not known how H. pylori is transmitted or why some patients become symptomatic while others do not. The bacteria are most likely spread from person to person through fecal-oral or oral-oral routes. Possible environmental reservoirs include contaminated water sources.
Since the source of H. pylori is not yet known, recommendations for avoiding infection have not been made. In general, it is always wise for persons to wash hands thoroughly, to eat food that has been properly prepared, and to drink water from a safe, clean source.
Treatment recommendations for children have not been formulated. Pediatric patients who require extensive diagnostic work-ups for abdominal symptoms should be evaluated by a specialist.
One research in Germany showed that the children of infected parents get more H.pylori infection later in they life.
