Hi,
My wife is an Opthalmologist. This is her opinion.
The main reasons for bleeding behind eye (known as vitreous hemorrhage) is diabetic retinopathy. Since that is not your case then there can be other causes-
- Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)- this is the separation of the vitreous from the retina. While separating sometimes it pulls on some blood vessel and can cause bleeding. This usually resolves on its own.
- Central retinal venous obstruction (CRVO)- this is sudden occlusion of the central retinal vein. Usually seen in patients with hypertension, but is also seen in patients with bleeding disorders.
- Subretinal neovascular membrane in ARMD- this is seen in older age group. Once the blood is absorbed then you need to undergo FFA to rule it out.
- Angitis - this is of rare occurance. It is imflammation around the blod vessels and causes bleeding in one eye.
The blood should subside in 5-7 days. Then you need to get a detailed retinal examination, FFA and various investigations to rue out angitis like ESR, complete blood count, ANA, chest X ray, serum electrolytes etc.
In the meantime you need to follow a few precautions-
- always keep a couple of pillows under your head while sleeping
- donot lift any heavy weights or strain
No need to worry, usually these vitreous bleeds donot reoccur and resolve very fast
