Question

My friend is a diabetic since childhood, taking insulin ...

Sent to Health Experts May 07, 2006 6:42 p.m.

My friend is a diabetic since childhood, taking insulin every day to avoid an attack. Recently she was told she would need a kidney since the one is so damaged. The latest complication - she has a severe unknown reaction to either food or medication where her lips and part of her face have become so swollen that she resembles a hippo. She is extremely depressed since this condition has been going on for over 3-4 months and no cure in sight. Are you familiar with this condition and if so, is there anything available to reduce the swelling and bring her back to normalcy? Thank you for any information.

As you mention she needs a new kidney, I would assume that she has kidney failure.

Kidney failure is known to cause swelling of the face.

Does that mean that unless she gets a new kidney, there is no help for her swelling?

I would assume they would begin her on dialysis
