My mom is 53 years old and for the past year she has been doing strange things with her mouth. She is constantly licking her lips, chewing her tongue, making weird sounds with her lips. I have asked her about it and its like she doesn't know what I am taking about. I have told her to stop when she is doing it, but she told me that it hurt her feelings and to stop talking about it. I am worried that it is some kind of neurological disorder. What can I do to help her, it this is a problem?

Hello,

From the comments made on your post, I have the following question for you. Is your mom taking any kind of psychotropic medications such as lithium, depakote, etc., or neuroleptics?

The symptoms that you are describing sound like Tardive Dyskenesia.

These symptoms generally appear in persons that have been taking these type of medications over a long period of time. If she has just begun taking this type of medication and the problem is already presenting then she should see her doctor and he may prescribe Cogentin which will lesson if not remove the symptons.

If she isn't taking any medications then she should see her physiciam and these symptons should be discussed in order that he has the opportunity to order the appropriate tests, to determine what and where the problem originates.

No, these symptoms aren't normal.

If this has been helpful, please do accept. Positive feedback is also appreciated.

Let me know if I can help you further.
