I have a absess tooth (my eye tooth). I went to the dentist yesterday and he put me on antibiotics, and scheduled me for a root canal next week. Last night i was in major pain and my whole face swelled up. Today i went back to my dentist to show him the swelling and he said it was normal, but if it continues tomorrow to call him. I'm a little worried tonight because my face is still very swollen all the way up to my right eye which is almost closed from the swelling. Do you think i should give the medicine longer to work, or go to the ER tonight? Thank you, nola

I would give it 48 hours for the antibiotics to begin to work. If there is no change by tomorrow, then I would be seen in the ER or perhaps even urgent care. If you are in pain still, then I would be seen. But the swelling may get worse before it gets better. It must be a pretty bad infection. Also rinse your mouth out with salt water and/or 1/2 water 1/2 peroxide. You can also apply a warm compress to the area or a cool compress as well.
