Question

taking pills

Sent to Health Experts June 04, 2006 3:02 a.m.

I have question of course. It is about taking pills like advil and tylenol for female monthly cramps. A female who was 18 was having bad cramping went to the doctor to get a stronger prescription for about 1600 mg to take for the pain. It was Ibprofin I think.

My question is she is now 28 and does not have any prescription for any medication for her monthly pain. She said she has been to the doctor but didn't get any prescription cause she can't afford the medication. She takes over the counter drugs like Advil, 200 mg. Is it ok for her to take 8 of the 200 mg pills to equal what she had prescribed back when she was 18? She said she does it all of the time to ease the pain. I am showing concern because it say do not exceed more than 6 per 24hr. She said that don't matter because she took 1600 for her cramps when she was about 18. Is that bad for her or do I just need to shut up and let her take what she wants?

I strongly advise not to take that much Motrin or Advil. The max on these medications (they are the same type of medications), should be 800mg 3 times a day with food or milk. Taking a higher dosage could lead to bleeding stomach ulcers. I suggest having her try Midol over the counter to help with her pain. This is specifically designed to treat cramps.
