Sent to Health Experts June 12, 2006 8:42 p.m.

I seem to be having pain in and around my flanks, or side lower back.
Also, I am experiencing fatigue and headaches.

Someone told me i could be having an accute renal failure because I take aspirin/tylonol mix up to 3000mg per day to combat severe migrains I get.

Is there a specific test that can check if i am having some type of kidney failure?

REPLIED Check Mark

BUN and Creatinine level in the blood can help you to diagnose a kidney failure.

You may also need an ultrasound of the kidney and a urinalysis to rule out a kidney infection.

Is there a simple way to test for this? Meaning, an OTC way or something. I have had bad experience with the medical doctors lately, and just want to know if this is a problem or not. What symptoms should I be looking for, etc?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

There is nothing over the counter for this. You need to see a health care provider who can order the following tests:

  • BUN, Creatinine . Normal ratio is BUN/Creatinine=20/1. If ratio is less than 10/1 that means there is a renal failure.
  • IVP test . Rules out if there is a damage inside of the kidney like necrosis of the papilla inside of the kidney. If there is a damage next step can be renal failure.
  • Urinalysis. Infection can be a complication of the analgesic nephropathy.
