I started experiencing what I can only call leg cramps ...

Sent to Health Experts June 15 01:28 PM

I started experiencing what I can only call leg cramps a couple of months ago. It only occurs while I'm sleeping and it does wake me up. The "cramps" usually aren't painful but uncomfortable. They begin in my ankle. If feels like bones are fusing together. I usually cannot move my foot up or down. Like I said, it isn't painful but very uncomfortable. Since this has always happened, so far, while I'm sleeping; I decided to try to ignore it and go back to sleep only to find that the experience will continue and develop into a real cramp in my calf. The only thing I can do is get up and walk on it. Sometimes for 20 minutes or more. Eventually it goes away and it doesn't seen to ever happen when I'm awake. It's getting to the point that I can only get about 4 to 5 hours of sleep at night -- it's now happening almost every night.

I'm not even sure that I'm actually experiencing cramps. I don't know what this is. Do you? I am diabetic and I've had 3 DVT's over the last few years (genetic, from what the Doctors can tell).

This problem may also be caused by a lack certain vitamins and minerals. Potassium being one of them. I see you have the banana's down and this will give you the potassium if eaten in sufficient amount.

Certain medications may also cause your legs to do this at night. If your on certain medications other then insulin you may want to mention this problem to your current health care person. You may also want to ask for a Neurological workup to rule out any other problems that may be Neurological in nature.
