Should ex with swollen leg & foot go to ER?

Sent to Health Experts June 24 06:30 PM

My ex-husband's leg and foot are swollen. He won't go to the emergency room. I'm worried. He said he got a very bad bug bite about a week ago. And he had a bad fall that hurt his knee. His knee hurt bad enough that he was lying down for it a couple of days ago. I just went to his house to find his leg and foot swollen. Is this an emergency? Should he go to the emergency room?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 45

Already Tried:
My ex has taken Ibuprofen for the swelling, but he ran out. He's been lying down with legs elevated when he can.

If the swelling has continued to increase and he had a bug bite a week ago, then yes this should be examined and most likely they will provide antibiotics to cut down on any risk of infection. They can also at the same time give him some pain medication for his knee and he should be putting warm compresses on his knee regularly and follow up with an orthopedic specialist so they can take some x-rays to determine the amount of damage done to his tendons and ligaments as well.

Thank you for your very prompt and very helpful response.

I just called my ex and told him what you said. He still doesn't want to go to the ER yet.

He is extremely stubborn.

Could you indicate the urgency of this situation? Given his stubborness, if he does go to a doctor at all, he will probably wait until Monday.

Can you let me know if there is a big risk to waiting?

To not going at all?

I very much appreciate your help.

If he does not get this checked out the infection from the bite can spread throughout his body and cause him to become very sick without proper evaluation. It is also possible that he could have some circulation problems and this can lead to heartv problems so he should really stop being so stubborn as men can tend to be. As long as he does not start running a fever then it might be okay until Monday but should he start running a fever, experience any nausea or vomiting then he should not wait as this could be taken care of with anti-inflammatory medication and antibiotics but should he wait there could be a health risk so if he will not go this weekend allow him to read this post as he should at least be seen Monday by his physician. And you are so very welcome for my promt and helpful response. I know how you feel as my husband tends to be stubborn as well but he does take my advice since he knows I am experienced in this matter and know how it can effect him by not taking good care of his health.
