Question

Is there any other reason for not breaking Topamax ...

Sent to Health Experts June 25, 2006 1:21 p.m.

Is there any other reason for not breaking Topamax tablet in half other than they have a bitter taste? That is the only reason I have found so far. I am supposed to resume Topamax at 50mg but only have 100mg tablets.

REPLIED Check Mark

Hello,

It is very good to ask advice about pill splitting. Some medications are not designed to be split such as capsules, timed released medications and others with special coatings.

Topamax is one of the medications that is ok to split. I would call the pharmacist and ask if they sell a pill splitter. So you get an accurate dose.

THANKS FOR THE INFO. I TOO AM AN RN BUT HAVE MS AND HAD TO GIVE IT UP FOR A WHILE. DO YOU KNOW WHY MOST SITES SAY NOT TO SPLIT TOPAMAX BECAUSE OF THE BITTER TASTE? JUST CURIOUS BECAUSE I CANNOT FIND ANY INFO ANYWHERE THAT SAYS THAT IT IS OK TO SPLIT. THANKS AGAIN!

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Here is a website which lists pills that can be split. (usually for patients to save money)

You could also call your pharmacist if you want to be reassured it is ok.
