Question

leg and foot cramps

Sent to Health Experts June 26, 2006 10:29 p.m.

I am having persistent (every night) leg and foot cramps that wake me up. They usually are in the calf, outside rather than inside the leg, and foot in the area of the big toe and out towards the ankle. It takes several minutes to work these cramps out, and often when I return to a horizontal position they return immediately. I'm also having some cramping of my hands. occasionally, but not usually at night. I am 58 years old, and until 6 months ago was exercising regularly (4 times per week) and vigorously.

How long have you had these symptoms?

Have you been to a doctor(s) about the symptoms -- if so, what did they say?

Over time, are the symptoms becoming more frequent -- less frequent -- or staying about the same?

Have you noticed any pattern about the symptoms -- such as what makes them start/stop -- get better/worse-- become more/less frequent?

Why did you stop exercising six months ago?

Do you have any other health problems -- if so, what are they?

What, if any supplements/vitamins/over-the-counter medications/prescription medications do you take?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Have had symtoms for several days in a row, prior to that several times a week.
Have not seen a doctor about them yet.
They are more frequent
More frequent at night, when horizontal.
birth of twin boys, sort of reduced my free time.
No major other health challenges. Mild high blood pressure (treated), Migrane Headaches (treated with Topomax)
Medications: Lodine for ahritic pain, topomax for migranes, zestoritic for blood pressure, multivitamin, glucosomine/condroitin for joints.

Zestoritic -- your blood pressure medication contains a diuretic. Certain diuretics can deplete the body of potassium which can cause muscle cramping -- including leg cramping.

Topomax has also been shown to cause leg cramping in some people.

It makes the most sense to rule out your medications as the cause of the leg cramps before looking for other possible causes. I recommend that you taught your doctor about a medication change -- to see if that helps.

Let me know if you need more input. If not, thanks for the opportunity to assist you... Please honor my efforts by Clicking the green 'Accept' button (located within this post -- above-right). Adding a bonus -- should you wish to do so -- would be warmly welcomed.

Good Luck!
